Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

Hi friends!

I hope everyone is doing well! As we are officially half way through 2020 I thought it would be fun to do a mid year book tag. The one I am doing I originally found through Caz from Little Book Owl on youtube. The creators of the tag are Chami and Ely.

Now before getting into the questions for the tag, I did just want to do a little self reading goal check in. To start, my Goodreads goal for the year is to read 50 books. Currently I have read 25/50, so I’m exactly half way through that challenge with which I am very pleased and honestly a tad surprised.

Then there is my 2020 TBR. At the beginning of the year I posted my 2020 TBR which included one book from each year of the past decade. Starting with 2010 and ending with 2019. I know from my past experiences with yearly TBRs that I have a hard time sticking to them. So 1) I thought that only having 10 books on it might make it easier and 2) it would be fun to focus on older reads. So far this year I have read 4 out of the 10 books from that TBR. Based on my past experiences, I am once again pleased and surprised! Hopefully this means that I may actually finish a yearly TBR for once! Here’s hoping!

So now, onto the tag!

Best book you’ve read so far in 2020.

I’ve been lucky enough to read some amazing books so far this year. However, I would have to say that my favourite so far has been The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It is an incredible book to begin with, although I think reading it specifically in the last month when the Black Lives Matter Movement has been so active and strong really made it that much more hard hitting. A wonderful book that I will recommend to everyone!

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020.

For best sequel, I think I would have to go with Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick. This series could’ve gone in a few different directions and I’m very happy with how this one turned out!

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller is one that sounds so good! I haven’t been able to get my hands on this one yet, but when I do, I will hopefully read it right away!

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

There are a few releases that I am almost impatiently waiting for in the second half of the year. Some I’ve been waiting for for only a few months or a year, and one I have been waiting on for many years. So with that being said, I have to go with Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer as it is the book that I have been waiting on the longest.

Biggest disappointment.

Everafter (Kissed by an Angel, #6) by Elizabeth Chandler was definitely the biggest disappointment so far, if not of my entire reading existence. Yes that sounds dramatic but I don’t care! I have never wanted to throw a book against the wall until I read the end of this one. I am still fuming months later and could go on a rant right now, however I will refrain myself for the sake of this post.

Biggest surprise.

This one would have to be Sadie by Courtney Summers. This book was raved about in the book community when it came out. Even with all the praise though, it took me until now to pick it up as it didn’t seem like my kind of read. I was honestly kind of scared to read it based on the content warnings I had seen and how dark I knew it could get. I am so happy that I ended up picking it up though! I was wonderfully surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

Now that I’m typing this out though, I could also interpret biggest surprise as in the plot, in which case, yes Sadie would still be a contender but I would have to say We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. That book. Holy crap. Did not see that coming and afterwards I was shocked by all the clues I had missed! A very big surprise indeed.

Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Angie Thomas hands down. I loved The Hate U Give so much that I now want to read anything and everything she writes. I originally had no interest in picking up On the Come Up, as the topic didn’t overly speak to me, however now I really want to read it! I am also sooo excited for Concrete Rose, I need it to be 2021 like now so I can read it!

Newest fictional crush.

There have been a few so far this year, but I think I would have to put Brady from After the Game by Abbi Glines as my number one. He is just so sweet, thoughtful and caring. What a lovely young gentleman. Abbi Glines can write some of the best male characters!

Newest favourite character.

Kady from Illuminae. I loved Kady. I want to be her friend. She rocks, end of story.

Book that made you cry.

It wasn’t until the end and for a second I wasn’t even sure if I would cry, but oh boy did The Fault in Our Stars by John Green make me cry! This was such a beautiful and raw story in my opinion. Many tears were shed during the reading of that book.

Book that made you happy.

I think for this one I have to go with Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. I loved watching these girls learn about what feminism is and how to stand up for themselves. It was such a powerful book for girls and it left me with a big smile on my face afterwards!

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received).

The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young. I didn’t even realize that this was the companion novel to Sky in the Deep which is another one I want to read. All I knew when I saw this cover was that I needed to get it because it looked amazing!

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I guess arguably you could say that the books that I NEED to read by the end of the year are the other 6 on my 2020 TBR. However, besides those, and truthfully I won’t be heartbroken if I don’t even get to those, there aren’t any. Of course I still want to reach my goal of 50 books read in 2020 so objectively the answer would be 25 more. Although, in the end, I don’t actually care which 25 as long as they are ones I already own because my physical TBR will already take me years to complete, and ones that I hopefully enjoy.

That’s it for my Mid Year Book Freak Out tag! Let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of these, as well if there are any specific books that you would still like to read in 2020! Don’t forget to follow my blog as well as my other social media which are linked on the sidebar.
